Overtones LIVE

Hosted by Renee Collins Cobb

Warren Cobb, Executive Producer

Overtones LIVE is a multi award winning radio show emanating from Lexington, Kentucky.  It has been recorded both in the Radiolex studios and in presenting our special editions - with a live audience at various venues like Austin City Saloon, Zanzabar, Bluegrass Barrel House, Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, and Tipsy Cow in Kentucky and at NashHouse Southern Spoon and Saloon in Nashville, TN.  All venue partners have been incredibly supportive of our presentation of live original music of all genres in their venue and we are truly thankful for all of them.

Host Renee Collins Cobb and her husband Warren Cobb, are executive producers of this show that features musical artists from Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee and Indiana performing their own original music.

We focus on promoting diversity and inclusion in styles and genres, and many of our artists have had songs on the top 100 Country charts, and have appeared on The Voice, American Idol, America's Got Talent and even X-Factor in Denmark

The “overtone” of presenting Overtones LIVE shows is what has snowballed into partnering with a variety of many other organizations as we bring an entire new meaning and reach to the phase “working in concert”.

Meaning in life is different from purpose in life. Meaning is personal, individual and unique. It is a gift. Purpose then becomes paying that gift forward and living in service to others. It is the intersection of your talents, contributions, impact and value with simply “what the world needs”.

SEPTEMBER 2023 - "I grew up in Eastern Kentucky where my parents nurtured a love of film, music, and business in our home.  I come from a long line of Appalachian musicians who were barn dance performers, radio stars, and championship instrumentalists. Kentucky Explorer Magazine featured our family’s history in September 2000 with a headline that read “Collins Family Was Important Part of ‘Golden Age’ of Country Music” as my grandfather and great grandfather left a rich legacy."

Join Warren and Renee as we walk you through the essentials of having a mission-focused business action plan and strategy.

MODULE 1: How to “Play it” with Meaning –

How to write that purpose statement and do so with a #2 pencil and a blank piece of paper
MODULE 2: How To “Play It By Ear”

How to get out of your comfort zone and jump into your discomfort zone – it is HERE where true growth happens and where short and long term goals are discovered and actualized.
MODULE 3: How to “Play It” with Feeling –

How to engage with others who are different than you and in the words of Walt Whitman “be curious – not judgmental”
MODULE 4: How to “Play Along” –

How to embrace new technology, ai, social media and a high tolerance for change.

These things are constants and have the ability to be game changers or career destroyers.
MODULE 5: How to “Play It” Like You Mean It-

How to execute your SMART GOALS – go into action.
MODULE 6 - How to “Play It” Again and Again” –

Actions always follow beliefs so connect your goals and actions to your purpose statement to ensure alignment. Put that action on repeat or shuffle mode – but never ever quit and always keep going!

In this episode of Women of the Bluegrass, the host Dr. Jordyne Carmack interviews Renee Collins Cobb about growing up around music and business, supporting local musicians through advocacy and leadership development, unconscious bias, and more. About this week's guest: Renee Collins Cobb is the President/Owner of Collins Consulting Group, Listen Locally, LLC and is the Executive Director of Room 17 Productions, a nonprofit organization that promotes music education. She is also the former host of NPR’s Red Barn Radio and radio shows titled “Overtones” and “Gray Matters” – a show about unconscious bias” which airs weekly on WLXU, Lexington Community Radio and across the state of Kentucky on various platforms and radio stations. She is also the co-chair of the University of Kentucky School of Music Alumni. Renee is also the project manager for The Sara Holroyd Oral History Project, The History of the UK Cheerleaders Project, The Greg Austin Story and I Am Diversity at the University of Kentucky Louie B Nunn Center for Oral History. She has also facilitated career development courses for incoming freshman at the University of Kentucky and served as an unconscious bias consultant for UK as well. Unconscious Bias Exercise: Read the following story. Do you know this story? A man and his son are driving in a car one day when they get into a fatal accident. The man is killed instantly. The boy is knocked unconscious. He is still alive and is rushed to the hospital for immediate surgery. The doctor enters the emergency room, looks at the boy, and says “I can’t operate on this boy, he is my son.” Wait. What? How can this happen? The fact that some of us struggle to make sense of this story illustrates just how pervasive our biases are. To be clear, the doctor is the boy’s mother. Bang! Is it possible that you struggled with this story because you imagined (assumed) the doctor to be a male? You are not alone. Indeed, I would suggest that most people – men and women – envisioned a male doctor entering the emergency room. Such is the hidden influence of unconscious bias.
